 Information About Hopkins
Johns Hopkins, as a premier teaching institution, is committed to train a growing and able biomedical workforce. These include graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, and many laboratory technicians who are continually trained on the job. Many innovative faculty members provide expert guidance through consulting with industry. In fact, faculty members are encouraged to have widespread interaction with industry and to garner significant compensation from outside consulting activities.
Johns Hopkins receives more federal research and development funds than any other U.S. university. The School of Medicine receives the bulk of awards granted by the National Institutes of Health to the university, but the Bloomberg School of Public Health is first among all public health schools in research support from the federal government.
The university is dedicated to translating its research into products and services to benefit patients all over the world. To that effect, Hopkins has built an impressive set of research resources available for scientists from both academia and industry: biomedical imaging facilities, a Molecular Imaging Core, a Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Core, a High Throughput Biology Center (including a brand-new chemical library screening facility), specialized tools and services for large-scale analysis of genetic variation and function, etc. In addition, the University is committed to supporting a local wet-lab incubator.
Johns Hopkins is actively engaged in organizing the bioscience community in Baltimore and the region. It has spawned and supported the Hopkins Biotech Network (HBN), a student run organization that promotes education, career development and networking in the field of biotechnology. The HBN facilitates communication and builds relationships between members (membership is free) and the biotech industry. In addition, the university is involved, alongside other regional universities, in working with the Mid Atlantic Venture Association (MAVA) toward a yearly event which will showcase intellectual property of interest to venture capitalists.
