 The Office of Corporate Alliances was founded in 2003 to assist industry mine the various parts of Johns Hopkins for commercialization purposes, and to help faculty make appropriate contacts with the business community in order to ensure that valuable Hopkins inventions are made available for the greater good of the world.
The office is staffed with venture capitalists, and functions as a kind of chamber of commerce for this large, decentralized institution. Steve Kubisen: Steve joined Johns Hopkins University Technology Transfer Office in September, 2006. He leads a group responsible for the Medical Device and Software Portfolios as well as providing spin-off company and technology marketing support across the enterprise. Steve has been both a corporate intrapreneur and startup entrepreneur in a variety of materials, electronics, and manufacturing businesses. In recent years, he has been an active mentor and angel investor (founded Cache Valley Angels investor club) in the materials, advanced manufacturing, device and IT sectors. As President of VEC Technology, Steve took an early stage composites molding company and significantly improved operations and revenues, yielding a 10 X valuation increase ($110M) on exit. At GE Plastics, he instituted systems to double new product sales in three years for the $500M Silicones division. As General Manager for GE Electromaterials, he successfully developed and commercialized a revolutionary circuit board material for the emerging computer and telecommunications industries of the early 90’s. Prior to GE, Steve held various senior management positions with Akzo Nobel and Union Carbide Corporation. As Vice President of Technology Commercialization, Steve has led the technology commercialization revitalization at Utah State University from 2002 to 2006. During this time, the Utah State University national ranking among the top 100 research universities for start-up company formation (normalized for research dollars) moved from #72 to #4. All other key metrics were likewise increased several-fold.
